I am a 50 year old woman living with the HIV virus, which was diagnosed when my husband passed away in 1993. I cannot say that I contracted the disease from my husband, as my life-style practices while I was using drugs and alcohol, was left much to be desired. Besides, if I knew, what good would it have done? So, I do not dwell on that. Initially, I became very depressed, the news was an automatic death sentence for me. After a period of sleeping my life away, I decided that I would do everything that my husband did not..which is getting busy with medication. I am on a multitude of pro-tease inhibitors that keep my virus at bay. I am currently undetectable (which is not to be confused with cured)just that the virus is not multiplying in my body at present. I speak out whenever possible,to break the cycle of shame, secrecy, and rejection. Basically, that is where I am today, reaching out to others that are newly diagnosed. I am very concerned with what is going on with the AIDS epidemic in Africa. They are hard-pressed for medication, and the women basically have little or no control over their bodies. Did you know that some men in Africa believe that if they have sex with a virgin,it will take the virus away? Lack of information about condoms is another issue. Our sister church in Tanzania sent two women over last year and I hosted one of them. The stories that we heard were unbelievable. They spoke about using condoms and rinsing them out and hanging them up to dry, to be used over again!
